What about characters occuring in multiple fandoms in the same 'verse? Example: Galadriel is tagged in 277 complete English 1000+ word fics, so she'd be ineligible, except that she occurs in three different fandoms (The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and for the latter two AO3 splits them again into all media types, books only and movies only, plus these may overlap and there's a Catch-All for J.R.R. Tolkien - Works), so would probably qualify as rare in the different fandoms while not being a rare character per se. Is she eligible?

Yes, she would be. :) We are not very particular about the 250 fic-rule, as not all of them feature the characters to a noteworthy extent.

On second thought, I'm not entirely sure whether or not some of my nominations are permitted. Tauriel skirts just below the 5% rule, so I did nominate her, but there are a lot of (mostly female) characters in Tolkien's world who must have existed because they had children (Glóin's wife and Gimli's mother, Thranduil's wife and Legolas' mother, and Bard's wife in the Hobbit movies who is implied to be dead in a half-sentence) but are never named or described. I didn't see a rule against quasi-OCs like that, but probably should have asked beforehand. Sorry if I'm being a nuisance.

That is a valid question. Thank you for bringing that up! :) Someone has also nominated some characters' mothers.

This will probably be something we'll ask the community to discuss. If the character is mentioned a couple of times so that you have something to go on regarding their characterisation, I don't see why we shouldn't allow them. However, I'm not sure about characters whose existence we just conclude.

We have a couple of other questions we want to ask the community, and I hope the discussion post will go up soon. :)

And that makes perfect sense. Since none of these mother/wife characters are mentioned very much (I can literally only think of a single sentence for two of the characters) I'll wait for the community discussion and probably amend my nominations after, depending on the outcome. Tolkien's legendarium, especially where it gets more mythical, has a lot of very sketchily drawn characters and writers tend to have to fill in the blanks more than not even with more prominent figures, so this doesn't feel like an exception to me, but I understand how it's probably not the best request to make for a fic exchange. :)

TW - Lydia Martin

I'm a Lydia Martin fan and trust me she's a rare character. There aren't many femslash stories featuring her in TW but the most popular ship is Allison Argent/Lydia Martin. Again, there aren't many het stories featuring her but the most popular ships are Lydia Martin/Jackson Whittemore, Lydia Martin/Stiles Stilinski and Lydia Martin/Aiden. You can cross-check with these. The bottom line is that there aren't many fanworks that feature Lydia Martin as the main character. She is always a secondary character or belongs to a secondary/background ship. That's why she appears in so many fanworks.

I apologise for the wait.

We're sorry but we don't really see any possibility of approving her. The numbers are simply against her. We did check the pairings you suggested (although pairings are irrelevant in this exchange) and if we add it all up, it's still far above the limit. Even eliminating the popular Derek/Stiles tag (which is admittedly the extent of our Teen Wolf knowledge) still puts her above the limit. She doesn't seem to qualify for this exchange's definition of 'rare'
